what we do

community composting

Composting food scraps was where we started, and every week we divert an average of 2,000 pounds of compostable organics from carbon-intensive waste transport systems and methane-producing landfills.

recycling initatives

We partner with Terracycle, local artists, and innovators to host weekly collections for different hard-to-recycle items. Subscribe to our newsletter for updates on what we are collecting.

community fridge

Our food donation and redistribution table is open for all to bring what they have and take what they need — no questions asked. All leftover food at the end of the morning to the Flatbush Community Fridge.

plastic recycling

We no longer collect soft plastics as New York Law requires stores to do so. We also want to encourage and support a collective consciousness away from products and companies which use plastics, wherever and however possible.

Learn more about which plastics are recyclable.

where your compost goes

We partner with The NYC Compost Project, hosted by Big Reuse, to deliver food scraps to the Salt Lot facility located on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

help us keep going

NurtureBK is 100% volunteer-run and donation-funded. We cannot operate without the support of our community. If you’re able, consider donating your time, skills, or money to keep this community service running!
